What is a UK Study Visa?

A UK study visa is an official permit given to international students to enter the country, stay and complete their education in the UK. There are three types of student visas:

  • Short-term Study Visa: A short-term study visa is for students who wish to pursue an English language course for up to 11 months

Note: Students wishing to switch to a UK Student Visa from inside the UK can do so by paying a fee of £490 or INR 49,437. Also note that per the latest visa guidelines, there will be a hike in visa charges and health surcharges for international students. The visa charges will likely increase by 15%, while the Immigration Health Surcharge may increase to £776 (INR 78,294) per year from £470 (INR 47,435).

Documents Required for UK Study Visa 

As a UK Study Visa applicant, you must present several documents to meet the visa eligibility requirements. You need to show proof of financial and academic records to secure your chances of getting the approval. Here’s a list of documents you should present at the time of the visa interview:

  • An accurately completed student visa application form 
  • Proof of parent’s or guardian’s consent in case you are a minor
  • A letter of acceptance or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) with a visa letter

  • Proof of funds to show that you have the means to cover your fees for the first year of the course and living expenses for one academic year. The cost of living in the UK is around £12,006 (INR 12,11,715) for nine months if you stay in London, while the charges are reduced to £9,207 (INR9,29,106) if you live outside London. However, in case you have been in the UK for at least 12 months with a valid visa, proof of funds is not necessary for visa application. 
  • The receipt of confirmation of the visa fee payment
  • ATAS certificate, if required
  • Payslips
  • Original academic transcripts or provisional certificates
  • Proof of English language proficiency 

Courses under UK Student Visa 

  • Any full-time course which is below degree level and has a minimum study hours of 15 hours a week
  • Any full-time course that is at a degree level or above 
  • Any full-time course at a degree level or above shares the same platform as the UK higher education programme.
  • A part-time course to obtain a qualification that’s above the degree level  
  • A foundation course for PG doctors or dentists
  • An English language course at B2 level or above in the Common European Framework of Reference Languages

How to Apply for the UK Student Visa?

The UK student visa process takes around three weeks after the application. Here are the steps to apply for your UK Student Visa:

Step 1: Check the eligibility criteria and determine whether you qualify. Make sure you have the letter of acceptance or the ‘confirmation of acceptance for studies’ (CAS) and the proof of funds to cover your expenses and course fees in the UK.

Step 2: Carefully check the required documents and get them ready

Step 3: Go to the official UK Visa website, register and create an account to apply online. Then, fill out the online form and print and sign it. Next, book an appointment at the visa centre using the online appointment calendar. Upon completing the online application process, you will get an email alert with your application number and other details.

  • Pay at the selected branches of Standard Chartered Bank
  • Pay through a demand draft in favour of the ‘British High Commission’ from a nationalised or foreign bank

  • Pay online using a Visa or MasterCard credit/debit card.

Step 5: Visit the visa application centre on the appointed date to submit your application and get your fingerprints scanned and a digital photo of yourself for a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
