Each sports discipline has its specifics. Some sports are essential qualities such as physical fitness and endurance; for others – sharpness and strength training. But some sports have a distinctive feature: they combine many different and, in their way, complex qualities and skills.

The most challenging sports require high physical fitness, technical skills, and psychological resilience. However, some of them can be profitable even for non-gambling people, for example, in the case of online cricket betting. Here are some of the sports that are considered the most difficult:

  • Gymnastics: Requires flexibility, strength, coordination, and precision.

For more accurate information, ESPN’s expert panel of sports scientists from the United States Olympic Committee, academics studying the science of muscles and movements, and several athletes and professional journalists ranked the most demanding sports. During the study, the following indicators were considered: strength, agility, speed, endurance, coordination, mental effort, and others. 

Pole vaulting

One of the most challenging types of athletics is pole vaulting. This exercise combines movements characteristic of running and jumping with additional challenges, such as carrying the projectile and performing gymnastic and acrobatic tricks at high altitudes with moving and resilient support.

In pole vaulting, the critical factor is the height of the pole grip and the athlete’s level of lift above the grip. It has been on the Olympic program since the first Games in 1896, and women have competed in it since 2000. The pole vault is also part of the track and field all-around.

According to scientists, it is one of the most challenging types of joint work and muscle stretching. The flexibility and willingness of the body to take the load is second only to gymnastics, figure skating, and diving.


It is a sport that originated from cattle grazing in Spain and Mexico and has spread throughout America and other countries. The modern sport of rodeo consists of racing a wild bull or horse. This activity involves a high risk of injury to the cowboy.

It is a challenging sport: only American soccer, rowing, weightlifting, and boxing are more complex.


Lacrosse is a very developing sport that allows you to improve hand-eye coordination, throwing, catching, passing, hand mechanics, and leg quickness. And the difficulty of this sport is just the combination of all these qualities. 

It is also one of the most physically demanding sports. Players need to fight off the forceful pressure of their opponents, fight for balls lying on the ground, and constantly keep their heads as if on a hinge so that their opponent does not knock them down.


This sport combines endurance, speed, strength, and power. Regularly practicing rugby helps players improve cardiovascular health, build muscle mass, and give the body an athletic look. Moreover, rugby promotes healthy weight control and can help players achieve a lean and muscular physique.

Rugby is an extremely physically demanding sport. It requires the ability to endure physical exertion for an extended period: second only to boxing, hockey, and soccer. 

Water Polo

One of the few sports included in the ranking that, at first glance, raises questions. Swimming in the water requires self-confidence and body control and develops coordination, strength, agility, and motor skills. The sport has a high level of physical and coordination effort.

In terms of endurance – the ability to continue to act for an extended period – it is second only to professional boxing. 

Downhill Skiing

Alpine skiing ranks second among Winter Olympic sports in this ranking. Firstly, very high speed: even an average skier reaches a speed of 100 km/hr on almost every distance. On sharp downhill skiing, athletes can reach up to 200 km/hour.

Secondly, from a technical point of view, this sport requires long training to master specific techniques, making it highly traumatic.


Soccer is also an extremely traumatic sport. Statistics show that the probability of getting a concussion in the number one sport is about 75%. On average, a soccer player runs from 10 to 13 kilometers per match, which requires a high fitness level.

But the complexity of soccer is not only in the danger of injury and high demands on physical fitness. Regarding agility and analytical aptitude, American scientists recognized “soccer” as the most challenging discipline.


Baseball may not seem challenging to train or train at first glance, but there are several reasons why it is on the list of the most demanding sports.

The baseball season in the world’s premier league, MLB is considered the longest in the world. Preseason games are played from February through March. The season has 162 games, making athletes’ endurance levels very demanding.

The average hit rate of a baseball player is 30%, which shows the need for psychological preparation of the athlete (in 70% of cases, he fails).

Getting to the level of the best is incredibly difficult. For example, on the way to MLB, only 1% of high school players get into college, and only 1% of those get into universities. And then a few players go to the draft and end up in the major leagues.

Gymnastic exercises are often very physically demanding, and gymnasts must be able to handle the fatigue to complete the performance. In addition, mental strength is also required, as one must control oneself and be able to focus on the task at hand despite any distractions that may be present.

Difficult and sometimes controversial judging sets artistic gymnastics apart from other sports. A 10-point system evaluates an exercise’s content- difficulty, composition (construction) – and execution. The gap between first and second place can be up to thousands of points, making the athletes’ requirements the highest.
